Leadership in the climate- and digital transition

Stockholm Green Innovation District is Stockholm’s new growth area for innovation and sustainability, an area stretching from Årsta to Sickla with the Tvärbanan light rail as a connecting link. It is being developed in collaboration between the City of Stockholm, Nacka Municipality, large and small companies, civil society and research organisations such as KTH Royal Institute of Technology, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, and RISE Research Institutes of Sweden.

is to renew and build sustainable districts with innovative, climate-smart solutions.
We wish to share our experiences with other districts and cities in Sweden and abroad.

ÅRSTA – GROWSMARTER

SUSTAINABLE RENOVATION GrowSmarter shows that Stockholm can grow sustainably with smart technology. The lessons learned from the project are essential to the development of the Stockholm Green Innovation District and the whole of Stockholm, which will be fossil-free and climate-positive by 2040.

THE MEATPACKING DISTRICT

A TEST BED FOR THE CREATIVE CITY By the year 2033, the Meatpacking District will be developed into an enticing destination for food, culture and experiences. The area is a test bed for urban development that puts Stockholm on the world map in terms of the future of city life, housing, workplaces, and sustainable urban environments.

Sickla and Nobelberget in Nacka

A TEST BED FOR THE ATTRACTIVE CITY The development of Sickla – from an industrial area to a vibrant city district – also entails lofty goals for sustainable construction and climate measures. Among other things, the area is home to one of Stockholm’s largest solar cell installations.

Hammarby Sjöstad 2.0

CITIZENS’ COMMITMENT TO CLIMATE CHANGE Since 2013, sustainability efforts in Hammarby Sjöstad have been spearheaded by the citizens’ initiative ElectriCITY Innovation, in a collaboration between citizens, tenant-owner associations, companies and academia. An important part of the work involves ensuring that the innovations that are tested can be commercialised and also developed in an international market.

Stockholm Exergi

CARBON DIOXIDE CAPTURE AND STORAGE Stockholm Exergi operates a research facility that captures and stores biogenic carbon dioxide at the bio-combined heat and power plant in Hjorthagen in Stockholm. The technology is called bio-CCS and the goal is to have a full-scale facility in place and operational by 2026.

THE NEW HAMMARBYBACKEN

YEAR-ROUND ACTIVITIES AND HEALTHY LIVING IN THE HEART OF THE CITY SkiStar’s sustainability strategy focuses both on reducing emissions and on getting more people moving. Hammarbybacken’s central location and good accessibility make it possible for everyone in Stockholm to use the area.

STOCKHOLM WATER AND WASTE

LEADERSHIP IN WASTEWATER TREATMENT The Henriksdal wastewater treatment plant is being developed and rebuilt to meet Stockholm’s current and future needs. It will be one of the world’s most modern treatment plants, with doubled capacity and significantly improved water purification.

TRANSITIONING FROM WASTE MANAGEMENT TO THE PRODUCTION OF COMMODITIES Reusing purified wastewater (instead of discharging it into lakes and seas as currently done) is becoming increasingly important as water shortages spread.

Green City Ferries

EMISSION-FREE FERRY TRAFFIC “Boatplan Stockholm” is a program to convert the entire Stockholm archipelago traffic to 100 percent emission-free operation with electricity or hydrogen as fuel.

Envac

SMART, EFFICIENT AND SUSTAINABLE WASTE COLLECTION Envac’s smart waste collection and recycling contributes to cleaner and more sustainable neighborhoods. Digital innovation engages citizens and makes the system cost-effective and resilient.

Invest Stockholm

ATTRACTING INVESTMENTS TO STOCKHOLM Invest Stockholm is the city’s investment promotion agency. In partnership with 54 municipalities, it promotes foreign establishments and markets the region internationally.

Smart City Sweden

SPREADING SWEDISH SOLUTIONS INTERNATIONALLY In 2020, 126 international visitor groups with more than 2,000 participants came to learn about Swedish solutions for smart and sustainable cities through the Smart City Sweden initiative.

A CREATIVE WORKING LIFE
Sustainable initiatives, working methods and solutions are a focal point in the planning, implementation, and use of the Sthlm New buildings. A total of seven buildings, one of which, Sthlm 01, will be a towering 27 storeys and 102 metres high – a sassy new landmark for the entire capital.

One of the EU's most innovative regions

 

Stockholm Green Innovation District has the strength to operate within one of the EU’s most innovative regions, the Stockholm region. Our ambition is to contribute to strengthening this position. Stockholm’s position is shown in the European Commission’s comparative study 2023, “Regional innovation scoreboard”. The European Commission conducts such an analysis every two years of 240 regions in Europe.

To measure the innovation capacity of the regions included in the Regional innovation scoreboard, the Commission uses performance indicators in four areas: conditions for innovation (staff, research systems and digitalisation), public and private investments (funding and support, business investment and the use of information technology), innovation activities (innovators, interconnections and intellectual assets), and impact (employment effects, sales effects and environmental sustainability).  Read the full report here.
