Nuclear technology holds the promise of significant benefits in a variety of fields, from medicine, agriculture and industry to electricity production. However, the only way to avoid the other side of nuclear technology - the harmful effects of ionizing radiation to human health and the environment - is through the effective implementation of a robust regulatory framework for nuclear and radiation safety. This framework includes an effective, independent and resourced regulatory body with clear and comprehensive responsibilities and functions, including to establish, sustain and continuously improve leadership and management for safety. National nuclear law provides the foundation for the regulatory framework for safety, including, its core elements and features. As such, nuclear law is relevant for all States engaged in the current or future use of nuclear technology.
For officials from IAEA Member States, the IAEA will hold a webinar on Establishing the Regulatory Framework for Safety: the Role of National Nuclear Law which will include an interactive Q&A session. Topics to be addressed include:
- relevant elements of the national legal framework;
- the relevant legal instruments adopted under IAEA auspices and IAEA Safety Standards;
- approaches to fostering the development of a regulatory framework for the control of radiation sources, safe transport of radioactive material;
- the Agency support available to Member States in establishing and strengthening a sound regulatory framework; and
- the lessons learnt in practice and in light of Agency legislative and technical assistance activities to Member States
